Energy drinks are highly acidic and can degrade your enamel. Dentists all across the board attest to the damage that acidic beverages may play in your oral health care. Just like with drinking coffee, refraining from consuming energy drinks can be a hard habit to break. When you’re a working adult, especially one who works long hours or may even have multiple occupations, energy drinks can provide you with the boost you may need. Unfortunately, they aren’t good for your oral health. Keep reading to discover why energy drinks may damage your teeth and what you can do to gain energy.

Energy Drinks and Corrosion

Did you know that some energy drinks are as corrosive as a battery? Regardless of how efficient your oral health care routine is, your enamel cannot withstand all of the acids found in energy drinks. Teenagers and those who play sports can drink up to four energy drinks a day, which is very alarming. If a high amount of acid has attached to your enamel, it’s challenging and nearly impossible, to reserve the damage. Eating correctly and drinking the right beverages plays a pivotal part in your oral health care.

PH Balance: Why it Matters

Beverages that contain a low PH level are acidic. Healthy drinks include water and milk because their PH level is around 7, making them two of the least acidic beverages. Water and milk have other health benefits such as keeping the body hydrated and helping to build strong bones. Tomato juice, lemon juice, and some of your favorite citrus drinks have a low PH balance so beware of your level of absorption.

How You Can Tell if Your Enamel is Eroding

If your teeth are highly sensitive when consuming cold or sugary substances, this could mean that your enamel is damaged. Other side effects include tooth discoloration, dents in the teeth, or cavities.

Ways To Prevent Enamel Erosion/Break the Energy Drink Habit

  • Drink a lot of water after eating or drinking to wash away acids and bacteria
  • Wait 20 minutes to brush your teeth after eating or drinking
  • Get 8 hours of sleep
  • Take a 20-minute power nap on your lunch break (this trick is not just for college students)
  • Exercise more, it’ll help your overall health and help you sleep better
